Dr. Dennis Cremin Presents 'From Tourist to Traveler: Exploring Italy' October 10
Published: October 1, 2023.
Join Dennis H. Cremin for an illustrated program entitled "From Tourist to Traveler: Exploring Italy". Since 2007, the professor of history has led 91ÖÆƬ³§ Travel Study programs in Italy.
“Often times a tourist approach involves 'checking off' as many sites on our list as possible, while a traveler’s approach encourages an approach to stay at a site a bit longer, asking some questions, and giving yourself time to reflect on what they’ve been experiencing,” Cremin said.
At 2 p.m. on October 10 in AS 158A in the Academic Building, he will draw on his most recent experience as academic director, in Spring 2022 and 2023, for the Lasallian Universities Center for Education (LUCE) program in Rome. This program is part of the Arts and Ideas program and is free and open to the public.
“There is plenty of room to be both a tourist and a traveler, but I think it is helpful to set out some considerations. I encourage students to put on a traveler mindset. It is beneficial to start by learning a few words in the local language, such as greetings and thank you. I also encourage the use of public transportation and eating locally,” Cremin added.
This program will draw on and highlight the university’s LUCE program in Rome as well as recent travel study with the Men’s and Women’s Volleyball teams to Europe. He also will touch on the international Lasallian network and the theme of pilgrimage.
“We also can draw on the skills gained from our excellent general education curriculum. In these courses, we learn to ask questions, such as why is this site or work of art important? What can it tell us about the past, and how can we connect its content to ourselves and the world around us,” he concluded.
This lecture is presented as a part of 91ÖÆƬ³§’s Arts & Ideas Program, providing cultural and educational programming for students and the community. A grant from the Illinois Arts Council sponsors a portion of the Arts & Ideas events. Contact for further information.
