91ÖÆƬ³§Women's Volleyball Splits Day 1 of Crossover; Lorelee Smith Wins 500th Career Win

The 91ÖÆƬ³§ women's volleyball team was unable to come away with the victory in its first match of the day as the Flyers lost to No. 15 Grand Valley State at the Hammond Sportsplex. However in the second match 91ÖÆƬ³§was able to reverse sweep and defeat Walsh 3-2 Friday (Oct. 18). With the victory in the second game, Head Coach  recorded her 500th career win at Lewis.

SET BREAKDOWN vs. Walsh
Set 1: Walsh 25, 91ÖÆƬ³§16
Both teams went back-and-forth before 91ÖÆƬ³§scored three straight after kills from Ray and a pair from Alvey to make it 6-4. Walsh went on a 9-1 rally which put the Cavaliers ahead 13-7 almost halfway through the first set. 

The Flyers were able to make it as close as four (19-15) after kills from Buxton and Ray. Walsh closed out the set on a 6-1 rally which gave them a 25-16 set victory. 

Set 2: Walsh 30, 91ÖÆƬ³§28
Both teams traded points early on again before five straight points by Walsh put them ahead 9-5 early in the set. Ray was able to make it as close as two (12-10) with a kill but Walsh scored five more in a row for a 17-10 lead. 

91ÖÆƬ³§fought back and was able to tie it 21-21 after recording four straight points capped off by a kill from Ray. Both teams traded points then the Flyers went ahead 28-27 after a kill from Schultz.

Walsh was able to close out the second set after winning the next three points and won the second 30-28 and went up 2-0.

Set 3: 91ÖÆƬ³§25, Walsh 23
91ÖÆƬ³§jumped out to an early 4-1 lead after a block from Stefanski and Ray. Walsh charged back and outscored the Flyers 8-3 the next 11 points to go ahead 9-7. 

Two straight kills from Buxton and Alvey quickly tied it at 9-9 before the Cavs scored the next four which gave them a 13-9 lead. Walsh led for a majority of the third set before going up 20-17.

The Flyers bounced back and scored four straight after kills from  (Bourbonnais, Ill./Valparaiso) and Schultz gave 91ÖÆƬ³§back the lead at 21-20. Walsh went on to score the next three points before the Flyers closed it out and captured the four including back-to-back service aces from Hickey to get 91ÖÆƬ³§back in the match.

Set 4:  91ÖÆƬ³§25, Walsh 23
91ÖÆƬ³§jumped out to an early 7-5 lead after the block from Alvey. The Cavs responded with four points in a row which gave them a 9-7 lead. 

Both teams went on to trade points before Walsh grabbed a 21-18 lead late in the fourth set. The Flyers were able to tie it after scoring three straight points which came from back-to-back kills from Buxton and Ray then an ace by Stefanski. 

The Cavs scored the next two points for a 23-21 advantage but 91ÖÆƬ³§scored four straight to win the fourth set 25-23 after a kill from Buxton. This tied the match at 2-2. 

Set 5: 91ÖÆƬ³§15, Walsh 11
Both teams traded four points each before 91ÖÆƬ³§went up 8-5 after a kill from Januski. The Flyers never gave up the lead after that however Walsh was able to respond and tie it at 11-11.

91ÖÆƬ³§was able to complete the comeback and win the next four points. The Flyers won the fifth set 15-11 and the match 3-2.

SET BREAKDOWN vs. Grand Valley State
Set 1: Grand Valley State 25, 91ÖÆƬ³§19
Stefanski started the contest with a service ace, but Grand Valley rallied off three straight points to make it 3-1. The Lakers extended their lead to 8-4 before the Flyers scored three straight, including kills from Stefanski and  (Cary, Ill./West Virginia Wesleyan), to make it 8-7. 

GVSU scored the next five out of six points to go up 13-8. 91ÖÆƬ³§looked to crawl back in the set after scoring three straight including kills from Stefanski and  (Springfield, Ill./Pleasant Plains) and an ace from Stefanski.  
The Lakers never trailed in the set as GV ended up winning the first game 25-19. 

Set 2: Grand Valley State 25, 91ÖÆƬ³§17
91ÖÆƬ³§started off the second set winning the first point then GVSU rallied off five straight points to make it 5-1. The Flyers rallied off four straight points capped off by a kill from Stefanski to tie it at 5-5. 

The Lakers scored six straight points to pull ahead 11-5 in the second set. Moments later, GVSU went up 23-13 before 91ÖÆƬ³§scored four straight points include blocks by Alvey, Buxton and O'Neill. 
GV ended the second set with back-to-back points to win it 25-17.

Set 3: 91ÖÆƬ³§25, Grand Valley State 20
GV jumped out to an early 3-1 advantage after 91ÖÆƬ³§scored three straight capped off by an ace by Stefanski to take a 4-3 lead. Both teams went back-and-forth before three more in a row by the Flyers after a kill from Schultz to take a 10-7 lead.

91ÖÆƬ³§never trailed the rest of the set building upon its lead and won the third set after a kill from Kaczorowski and a block from O'Neill and Schultz. 

Set 4: Grand Valley State 25, 91ÖÆƬ³§22
The Lakers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead then 91ÖÆƬ³§scored eight straight points go up 8-2 early in the fourth.  Moments later, 91ÖÆƬ³§was ahead 10-4 after a kill from Schultz. Grand Valley State responded with eight straight points for an 12-10 advantage. 

GV never trailed the rest of the set and 91ÖÆƬ³§was able to make it close for most of the set but the Lakers closed it out.  The Lakers led 24-18 late in the fourth before the Flyers showed one last fight after scoring four in a row to make it 24-22.

The momentum would be stopped however as the Lakers secured the next point then the match 3-1.
